About
I am currently a PhD student at University of Sheffield. My thesis is concerned with postcranial ontogeny (specifically the shoulder and thorax) in Neanderthals and Modern Humans.
For this a very large dataset of remains from different periods and climatic regimes will be used to sample a large amount of modern human variation, placing Neanderthals in context.
I use virtual techniques in my work, analysing CT and surface scans through geometric morphometrics and morphometric mapping.
An offshoot from this is an interest in virtual reconstruction of fragmentary material, and statistical validation of these.
I have also worked as an archaeologist, both on research excavations and commercially, in the UK and abroad. I am currently part of the excavation team for the projects excavating the middle Palaeolithic site of Cueva Antón and the Upper Palaeolithic sites of Finca Doña Martina and Abrigo de la Boca in Murcia. These are under the direction of Prof. João Zilhão (University of Barcelona, formerly University of Bristol) and Prof. Josefina Zapata (University of Murcia).
For more information on these sites, see João Zilhão's website: http://www.icrea.cat/Web/ScientificStaff/Joao-Zilhao-535
Research interests: 3d imaging; geometric morphometrics; biomechanics; subsistence strategies; palaeolithic landscape use
